P&G announced yesterday in Davos that it is going to produce the first recyclable shampoo bottle made from up to 25 percent recycled beach plastic. While this is a good news, there is a lot to do in the plastic industry. Of course we need to solve the pollution problem related with this materials, specially when they end-up in our oceans, but there is still much to do in this relatively young materials.
The Ellen Macarthur Foundation stated recently that we need new and better plastics, this in line with those who have been working in Circular Economy models or models related to sustainability. On one hand there is a lot to be done in the traditional polymers out there and all the additives that tend to be problematic for there toxicity. On the other hand, much more needs to be done in the area of biopolymers improving their resistance.
Plastics are not the enemy and there are great solutions made of these materials. Our fight is not against the products (bags, cups, straws, etc.) but to have better materials that are completely recyclable or compostable according to our needs.
